Last month, Sasha's owners called saying that they had noticed a dark brown discharge from under her
tail and she was unwell. Sasha was ten years old. She had had a litter of puppies many years ago, but
was never spayed.
The discharge was coming from her uterus, in medical terms called a pyometron.
This is a pus filled uterus which is potentially harmful and in Sasha's case needed to be dealt with
urgently.
After a clinical exam, Sasha was given a pre-anaesthetic injection, started on intravenous fluids
and then underwent a general anaesthetic.
Surgery was performed to remove a large pus filled uterus. She recovered slowly and was sent
home after an overnight stay with after-care instructions and pain relief medication.
Sasha, similar to many senior entire female dogs may develop problems later in life
such as pyometron or mammary (breast) cancers. For this reason, we recommend that all female dogs
not used for breeding to be spayed. It can be done as early as six weeks old but we prefer six months old.
If your dog is entire and you want to save money on your council registration or eliminate
the problems as above, call us now and discuss it with one of the team.
Please tell your friends, if their dog is entire, they may not know.
