A GUIDE TO KITTEN CARE

Kitten Care is another area where we specialise in the following:

VACCINATIONS:

We routinely immunise against Cat Flu and Feline Enteritis. These diseases are sadly still common among the unvaccinated cat population, and very contagious through casual contact with other cats.

    KITTENS:

  1. 8 weeks old.............FLU/ENTERITIS/CHLAMYDIA VACCINE
  2. 12 weeks old...........FLU/ENTERITIS/CHLAMYDIA VACCINE
  3. ANNUAL BOOSTER.

Kittens older than 12 weeks still require 2 initial vaccines for protection. Local Boarding Catteries require current vaccinations at this level.

There are also vaccines available against Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (Cat AIDS) and Feline Leukaemia (FeLV). Cat AIDS is especially a problem with any cat that goes outside. These vaccines can be incorporated into the routine vaccine programme. For information please ring our surgery.

INTESTINAL WORMS:

SUGGESTED WORMING:

  1. 3 to 8 weeks old...…..WEEKLY
  2. 8 to 12 weeks old.…...EVERY 2 WEEKS
  3. 3 to 6 months old........MONTHLY
  4. THEN......…….. 3 MONTHLY FOR LIFE
  5. (N.B.) If worms are seen-do more often.

A GOOD BROAD SPECTRUM WORMER (eg, Milbemax/Drontal/Felix Paste) IS THE BEST WAY TO WORM YOUR PET. MANY TABLETS AND LIQUIDS SOLD IN PET SHOPS AND SUPERMARKETS DO NOT KILL ALL WORMS.

HEARTWORM:

Research has shown that feline heartworm infection is more prevalent than previously thought. Unfortunately, the disease is difficult to diagnose in cats and dangerous - it can kill cats as well as dogs.

Every cat exposed to mosquitoes may be at risk. There is no treatment only prevention, which can be once a month tablet (HEARTGARD FX or MILBEMAX) or a monthly application of REVOLUTION or ADVOCATE.

DESEXING:

There is no advantage in Queens having a litter. Queens can come into season as early as 6 months (sometimes earlier). It helps prevents roaming and fighting habits developing. We desex at 5-6 months old for both Male and Female.

MICROCHIP can be done at the same time as desexing.

GOOD FEEDING:

RULES OF THUMB:

  1. Kittens cannot survive on raw meat only.
  2. A good variety of food between 6 and 12 weeks of age means a less fussy adult cat.
  3. Always introduce a new food a little at a time to start-otherwise upset tummies may follow.
  4. We recommend a well-balanced PREMIUM DRY FOOD (EUKANUBA Kitten) which is available from our clinic.
  5. Try to encourage to chew raw chicken wings /necks.

HOW OFTEN TO FEED:

  • 4 times daily to 8 weeks old
  • 3 times daily 8 to 12 weeks old
  • Then twice daily (maybe once daily after 6 months).

Do not feed purely dry food to a male cat. Always have fresh water available.

FLEAS:

There are many products on the market; we recommend the topical spot on formulations (ADVANTAGE, FRONTLINE, REVOLUTION). But remember you must do two things for total flea control:

  1. Attack fleas where they breed-i.e. the carpet/bedding etc-anywhere the pets spend time.
  2. Treat ALL pets in the household

(N.B.) Always check labels of chemicals before use. Some chemicals cannot be used with others and cannot be used on cats.

Never use permethrin products such as Advantix or Permoxin on cats.

IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS - CONTACT OUR SURGERY FOR ADVICE

POISONS:

Cats are very susceptible to many products including some that are safe with dogs-eg DETTOL, ASPIRIN, PARACETOMOL.
