Lumps

Lumps can be dangerous!

Skin lumps can occur at any age but especially in middle and older age. Luckily the majority of them by far are benign (that is slow growing and not likely to spread and cause problems), but some can be nasty and be malignant cancer that spreads inside the body.

All lumps should be checked early and tested to make sure that they pose no threat to your pet's health.

Usually a needle biopsy of the lump and testing it in house will give enough indication if we need to act further. This procedure is simple, requires no anaesthietic and gives little discomfort.

Occassionaly a lump will need to be tested further before a plan can be made to best treat it. This may involve sending further samples to the laboratory or sometimes taking a chunk of tissue from the lump and sending this off.

We are extremely fortunate to have veterinary oncologists(cancer specialists) in Brisbane. We can liase with them and refer you to them if it is warranted.

Remember that most lumps are not nasty and may not even need any treatment, but you don't know until they are tested.

For peace of mind have all lumps that occur in the skin of your dog or cat examined.
